Chapter 23

I’m in Cameron’s boxers and oversized t-shirt, sitting on his cot. My wet clothes are in the dryer. I used Lucy’s blow dryer to dry my hair, and I texted my dad to tell him I was staying at Catie’s house tonight. When he didn’t respond, I called home to make sure my alibi was grounding-full-proof.

Jamie had informed me that Dad was out cold on the couch—it seems that his Sunday night ritual is also becoming his Friday night one as well. I told Jamie that I would take him to the movies over break to make up for not spending any time with him lately and to remember to tell dad that I was staying at Catie’s. Then, I sent her a message to cover for me—”no prob” she had texted back. Then she added a smiley face and the message—”don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

“Do you understand what a risk this is?” Olivia’s voice rises. She is yelling at the rest of the team in the living room. And I’m stuck in the boys’ room with the door closed. I feel like a child whose been sent to bed without supper, but Cameron had begged me on the drive back to the station to let him handle his team’s reaction, at least at first. I had thought the pushback would come from Grady who remains silent except for a few interjections here and there. It’s Olivia who’s livid about what we’ve done. And it’s Cameron who fights her at every turn as she tries to reason with him.

“What risk, Olivia? It’s one person, not a hundred or a thousand.” Cameron’s yells and then, unfortunately, they begin to argue quietly, after Grady asks for everyone to calm down. This cuts my eavesdropping to a minimum. Damn it.

I resign myself to laying my head on Cameron’s pillow until I hear a knock. It’s Lucy coming through the door with my dry clothes.

“Not the greatest look for you,” she states looking me over. “I’m sure you want these.” She throws my dried clothes, a rumpled ball, on the cot. I assume she’ll leave. Instead, she comes in and sits on Jordan’s cot across from me. She tries to look through me. I’ve never spoken with her alone. Lucy’s not the type for girl talk, so I’m surprised when she stays. “Go ahead, change. It’s not like I haven’t seen girl parts before.” Her sarcasm makes me grin awkwardly.

“Okay, then…” I say with raised eyebrows.

I strip down to my bra and underwear. “So your mom?” she says, indifferently. “You really believe this is what’s best for her—bringing her back to life?” Her face shows perfect features minus emotion.

“Yes.” I pull my t-shirt on, button my plaid flannel and sit down to pull my socks on.

“How do you know? I mean. How’s she going to like not being able to just go home to your brother and dad? I hate to be blunt, but have you thought about what this is going to look like if she transcends? It’s not always a pretty picture for intuitives if they return.
